Second Annual Beyond the Battlefield: Interpreting St. Clair’s Defeat through the Eyes of Tribal Citizens
October 20 @ 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
This event gives visitors the opportunity to experience Native cultures, past and present, from citizens of Federally Recognized Tribes whose ancestors were victorious in St. Clair’s Defeat (1791). This unique 2-day event will showcase interactive historic programming featuring Shawnee, Miami, Ottawa, and Wyandotte history and culture, with special children’s programming. Presentations will include discussions about Tribes today and modern Tribal perspectives, and traditional skills.
Both days’ events include: 1) interactive historic programming featuring Tribal interpreters, including children’s programming; 2) presentations throughout the day; 3) battlefield tours; and 4) dependent on grant funding, a new exhibit at the Fort Recovery Museum. Guests will interact with eight Tribal interpreters, participate in events to engage their children, listen and participate in one or more presentations, take a battlefield tour, and hopefully tour “St. Clair’s Defeat Revisited: A New View of the Conflict” in the Museum’s community room.
The interactive historic programming will feature Shawnee, Miami, Ottawa, and Wyandotte history and culture. A large tent will be set up to host interactive displays and exhibits from eight Tribal Humanities Professionals.
Presentations (3 to 4 each day) will be either modern Tribal perspectives and conversations with several Tribal Humanities Professionals, or single Tribal Humanities Professionals discussing specific traditional skills or Tribal histories. Chief Glenna Wallace, of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, will present both days.
Battlefield tours at designated times (~45 minutes, 3-4 each day) will be given by archaeologists from the Applied Anthropology Laboratories, Ball State University.
This event was funded in part by an Ohio Humanities Ignite Grant.
