Beyond the Battlefield: Interpreting St. Clair’s Defeat through the Eyes of Tribal Citizens

August 12, 2023 @ 9:00 am 4:00 pm

This is a cultural event featuring citizens from the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, and Wyandotte Nation. These young dynamic speakers will be available for two days to discuss and inform visitors about their tribal heritage and culture from a past a present-day perspective.

Saturday’s events will include interactive historic programming featuring Shawnee, Miami, and Wyandotte history and culture. A large tent outside the Fort Recovery Museum will host interactive displays and exhibits with interpreters from three Tribal Nations. Guests will be greeted by a Fort Recovery Historical Society host and encouraged to have conversations with each of the five interpreters. Interpreters will explain their Tribal Nation’s essential relationship to the site and the battlefield of St. Clair’s Defeat.

Battlefield tours (~45 minutes) at designated times will be given by archaeologists and St. Clair’s Defeat researchers from Ball State University. The focus of the tours will be the strategy of the nine tribes before and during the battle, while defending their homelands, their culture, and way of life.
