History & Genealogy Day: Featuring Chief Glenna Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe

Columbus Metropolitan Library presents a full day of FREE genealogy and history activities on Saturday, Nov. 9. Complimentary boxed lunch included!

They’ll welcome keynote speaker Chief Glenna Wallace to share her journey to reconnect the citizens of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma back to their historical homelands. Attend sessions and roundtables to learn research tips and bring your genealogy research questions to get help from Main Library’s Local History & Genealogy staff.

Also, bring in items from your own family history to be scanned into our digital archives and take a tour of the Local History & Genealogy space and Digital Lab.

Come join for informative and interactive sessions:

9:30 AM – Check in and seating 

10:00 AM – Chief Glenna J. Wallace, Chief of the Eastern Shawnee of Oklahoma

Hear from Chief Wallace, the first female chief of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, about her journey to reconnect the citizens of her tribe back to their historical homelands in Ohio. Chief Wallace discusses the story of Indian Removal through current efforts to preserve earthworks and cemeteries in Ohio.

11:30 AM – Genealogy and Local History Roundtable

Learn about new resources, events and other happenings from organizations around Central Ohio.

12:00 – Lunch Break (Pre-register by Nov. 1 for a free boxed lunch)

1:00 PM – Ohio Cemeteries for Genealogy Research with Krista Horrocks, Ohio History Connection

Hunting for an ancestor’s gravestone can be an exciting adventure or a frustrating series of dead ends. Learn how cemeteries and gravestones can help, or hinder, your genealogical research.        

2:45 PM – Using the Franklin County Recorder’s Public Record Search with Hanna Detwiler, Franklin County Recorder’s Officer

The Franklin County Recorder’s website is a treasure trove for researchers. Learn tips and tricks on best ways to search the site.

All activities and sessions are free. Complimentary boxed lunch included.
