Trauma, Love, & Motherhood: Contemporary Themes in Verdi’s Il Trovatore

September 28, 2021 @ 6:00 pm 7:30 pm

Join the Toledo Opera for a panel offering a fresh perspective on Il Trovatore, and explores thematic connections to contemporary life in Toledo, by examining the character arc of Azucena, a Roma woman who avenges her mother’s murder through an unspeakable act. Deep-rooted issues of mental health, trauma, motherhood, and resilience are prevalent throughout the opera as well as in today’s society, and Toledo Opera is proud to engage artists, scholars, and Toledo community thought leaders in this important beyond-the-stage conversation.

Panelists:

Dr. Naomi Andre, Professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, and the Residential College, University of Michigan
Sonia Flunder-McNair, Founder of Urban Wholistics
Dr. Mary Natvig (moderator), Professor of Musicology/Ethnomusicology, College of Musical Arts, Bowling Green State University
Deborah Nansteel, mezzo-soprano performing the role of Azucena in Il Trovatore
Christina Rodriguez, Executive Director of Mom’s House

This event will be offered virtually via Toledo Opera’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
